Peter Steggo and Inger Fjällås have together gone through about a hundred Pite Sami stories from the 1890s, collected by Hungarian linguist Ignác Halász, and make a selection available in the book Alvos giehto - Terrible stories from Arjeplog. And on Sunday during the Christmas market, together with the municipality of Arjeplog, Peter and Inger, we have the pleasure of inviting you to a book release here at the Silvermuseet!

The book, which contains 22 stories, is a testament to the hard work that has gone into working through the ancient texts, adapting, modernizing and rewriting them in today's orthography.
The linguist Ignác Halász (1855-1901) visited Norwegian and Swedish Sábme three times in the 1890s, and on one of these visits he documented about a hundred stories, jokes and proverbs from the Pite Sami area. These stories were published in 1893 in the book Népköltési gyűjtemény a Pite lappmark Arjepluogi egyházkerületéről - 'A collection of folk poems from the church district of Arjepluog in Pite Lapland'.
Because the stories were written in the vernacular of the time and without a fixed orthography, they have been difficult to read to some extent - and the book has been unknown to the vast majority. Peter and Inger's efforts, with support from Arjeplog Municipality and Trøndelag County Council, are now making a selection of the stories available and a part of Arjeplog's cultural treasure is returning home.
The book has also been illustrated with stunning photos by Stina Renberg - who will also be present at the book launch.
