Sami National Day

Sami flag with winter landscape and snow-covered hut diffuse in the background.

The Sami National Day is celebrated on February 6. The pandemic means that we cannot invite anyone to a physical celebration, but for us it is important to mark the day. We do this with an exhibition review and competition on Instagram.

The background to the Sami National Day is the first Sami National Assembly held on February 6, 1917 in Trondheim. One of the driving forces behind the National Assembly was Elsa Laula Renberg, a woman who has meant a lot to the Sami political movement. Through her tireless commitment to the Sami people, she has gone down in history as one of the greatest pioneers of the time.

And she was not alone! An incredible number of people were concerned about the injustices the nation states were inflicting on the Sami people. The Arjeplog region was no exception, quite the opposite. Several great names in the Sami community were raised here. From the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, we see that many of the Sami political representatives have a connection here.

In 2019, Árjepluove sámesäbbre celebrated its 100th anniversary, and in connection with that we made an exhibition where we highlighted some of the pioneers who came from here, based on Lars Rensund's archive that is with us.

Now that we are unable to invite you to a physical celebration, we have digitized the exhibition so that you can take part in it. There is a lot of exciting things to read about the people who have laid the foundation for today's Sámi policy.

Here you will find the exhibition Arjeplog - a Sami political hub, use the arrow keys to scroll back and forth, double click with the mouse to zoom. NOTE! Unfortunately difficult to use on mobile.

On Instagram we have a competition that runs until Sunday evening, February 7. You can find it under our highlights and you can win a belt from StoorStålka. The winner will be drawn on Monday 8/2. Enter and try your luck!
