Rádestit - consult: pilot project on local collaboration in the mountains

White winter landscape on the bare mountain, at the edge of the forest, light blue sky with white clouds. A few trees are visible from the center of the picture and out to the right.

Silvermuseet wants to work for local management solutions and we believe that the expertise we have, together with the knowledge we have about the conditions in Arjeplog, can help to find sustainable long-term management models. Therefore, we welcome an initiative from the Sami villages where they want to look at the possibilities of collaborating locally on hunting and fishing licenses in the mountains.

It is the Sámi villages with reindeer grazing lands west of the cultivation boundary, Luokta-Mavas, Semisjaur Njarg, Svaipa, Ståkke and Maskaure, that see the need to find local solutions. After the Girjas ruling in January 2020, there have been heated discussions in several northern municipalities about who should decide on the leases in the mountains. The hope is that such a situation can be avoided in Arjeplog.

Because we believe that it is possible to find local management solutions that take into account the needs of reindeer herding, the recreational interests of Arjeplog residents, tourism and the business community in the municipality. The work can be interesting for large parts of Norrland if we succeed in showing how local collaboration can be used to find common solutions in the future. Therefore, it feels very exciting to run this project, which has been granted funding from Region Norrbotten, Sametinget and granted village funds.

The project is scheduled to start in May, and will have a dedicated project manager to liaise with the various stakeholders in the municipality.
