Item of the month: waist belt

Woven belt in the colors red, yellow, green, white and blue. The belt is rolled up and photographed against a white background.

Waist belt, Arvidsjaur area tradition.

In the spring of 2022, the Silvermuseet received a donation of duodje, Sami handicrafts, made by Göta and Hjalmar Larsson from Moskosel and Lomträsk during their time as craftsmen. Hjalmar even had some crafts for sale in the Silvermuseet's shop during the 70s and 80s - maybe you happen to have some of his work?

The waist belt, which is 205 cm long, has been woven by Göta with a loom. The warp threads have the colors green, red, yellow, blue and white as well as red "hoppers". The weft thread is green. The ends of the belt are finished with two tassels in the same colors as the woven band.

Waist belts like this are used for several of the Sami costumes by being wrapped around the waist and tied at one side, where the tassels are allowed to hang down. If you're in the mood for weaving, you can find the pattern for this particular belt in the book "sjnjissjkot ja låhtåt" where Göta has shared it!
