Item of the month: Frida Nyberg's driving license from 1929

Old driver's license from 1929. White background with blue frame where text, passport photo and stamp and red stamp have space.

The year is 1929, April 16 to be precise. A young woman from Båtsjaur, Arjeplog, gets her driving license issued on behalf of the county administrative board in Uppsala.

Primary school teacher Frida Maria Nyberg has passed the requirements for driving a car! The requirements included that the inspector should consider Frida a good driver and she should be well acquainted with the construction, care and operation of the car. Not as high as today's driving test and theory test - but in a society where awake cars or female drivers were commonplace, it must still be seen as an achievement by Frida!

The 13 x 11.7 cm card features a black-and-white image of Frida and a stamp of 10 kronor. The license was given to the museum as a gift by her sister, midwife Siri Sundström, in 1969.
