International conference on Sami archaeology

For three days, about 50 archaeologists and other interested parties, mainly from the Nordic countries, will meet to discuss current issues in Sámi archaeology.

One theme to be discussed during the conference is the latest developments in Sámi archaeology, e.g. what knowledge the objects that thaw out when the glaciers melt can provide. The conference will also discuss how indigenous methods can be used in archaeological work and the importance of ethnobiology for archaeology. This is an important platform for those working in Sámi archaeology, an opportunity to be updated on the latest research results and discuss current issues.

Four years ago, a similar conference was held at the Siida Museum in Inari, and now it is the turn of the Silvermuseet/INSARC to host the conference, organized in cooperation with the University of Oulu and Stockholm University.

Through the research conducted at the Silvermuseet's research institute INSARC over the past 20 years, we have an important role to play in archaeology and we are pleased that so many participants choose to come here to Arjeplog to participate in the conference.
