The marketplace

Innovative cultural heritage

The old market place, or Plass'n as it came to be known, is strategically located between the church and Skeppsviken. It has a long history dating back to the 17th century mining project at Nasafjäll.

The marketplace came to function as a hub, primarily for trade, but also as a meeting place between burghers, Sami and later settlers. It was here that skins, wadding, flour, salt, silver and other products were exchanged, bought and sold. And it was here that those who gathered could get and share the very latest news about what was happening on the coast, inland and far beyond.

At present, this cultural-historical site is well hidden under brushwood and grass. With the Silvermuseet's research as a basis, we will, during the project, with the help of various solutions in both digital and analog form, be able to give visitors an insight into how the site has been used.

The project is funded by Region Norrbotten, Framtidsbanken, ISOF and Arjeplog municipality.
