The background to the Sami National Day is the first Sami National Assembly held on February 6, 1917 in Trondheim. One of the driving forces behind the National Assembly was Elsa Laula Renberg, a woman who has meant a lot to the Sami political movement. Through her tireless commitment to the Sami people, she has gone down in history as one of the greatest pioneers of the time.
Och hon var inte ensam! Otroligt många engagerade sig i de orättvisor nationalstaterna utsatte det samiska folket för. Arjeplogstrakten var inget undantag, tvärt emot. Här har flera stora namn inom det samiska samhället fostrats. Från början av 1900-talet in i nutid ser vi att många av de samepolitiska representanterna har en koppling hit. För drygt två år sedan byggde vi en utställning på temat, som är möjligt att ta del av digitalt.
