Lecture: Reindeer herding - management with a focus on reindeer

Two composite images, one winter image where reindeer are being moved by a person in an orange jacket driving a red scooter in rocky terrain. The second image shows three women with snares together with a small child inside a reindeer pen,

Reindeer herding is a central part of Sami culture and also a form of meat production in northern Sweden. But reindeer herding is also an effective strategy for utilizing ever-changing grazing resources - on the reindeer's terms.

Reindeer herding is practiced in many different places in the Arctic region, and despite the similarities in the way of doing business, there may be major differences in conditions and challenges for reindeer herders. Based on both research and practical knowledge from Sami villages in Arjeplog, Anna-Maria Fjellström and Helén Sundqvist highlight in this lecture different perspectives on the opportunities and difficulties of reindeer herding in a changing landscape.
