The small, big museum celebrates its anniversary

For over 50 years, the Silver Museum has been the center of Arjeplog and the museum has changed with the times.

The beautiful building hasn't always housed ancient artifacts and a collective cultural treasure. The building took shape in the mid-19th century as a nomadic school for the children of the migrants.
During a visit by the school inspector, it was determined that the building was substandard "that the premises are not suitable, that they are cold, draughty, not fit for human habitation, if not dangerous to health".

Time passed and the school with it, only in 1945 a new school was established and the old nomadic school would be left alone with many memories. The building would remain empty for 15 years, and the different seasons left their mark on the building. During that time, there was dancing, laughter and the occasional tear shed over unrequited love when the local youth used the abandoned building for dance evenings.
They danced well into the small hours or until the local priest showed up and interrupted the festivities.
By the early 1960s, the building had fallen into a state of disrepair, but Dr. Einar Wallquist realized its historical value and put his plan into action.

It was in the spring of 1965 that the building was repaired under the supervision of Dr. Wallquist and the experienced builder Karl Juting. Already in July, the collections of objects and stories began to move in, and in the fall a new era in the building's history began - the Silver Museum was inaugurated.
Over the years, the exterior of the Silver Museum has changed as the business has grown and many memories have been added.

Don't let your eyes deceive you, the museum may look small but much is hidden in the nooks and crannies of this jubilee.
