SilvermuseetSilvermuseet in Arjeplog

Humans have lived here for thousands of years. They have left silent traces after themselves. Every fireplace, every arrowhead and every knife are a story – a message.

Silvermuseets prehistoric permanent exhibition, Traces, is based on the theme of interaction. This theme has three variations: people’s interaction with their natural environment, with other people, and with the gods and the spirit world – the spiritual surroundings. The expression of the beautiful objects, archaeological finds from the district, is further amplified by the artistic design of the exhibition.

The hunter-gatherers adapted their living patterns to suit the changing seasons. Knowledge of the natural surroundings was necessary for survival.

Affinity with other people was also needed. The need for affinity was just as strong then as it is now. Contact with other hunter-gatherer societies was extensive, and the population of Arjeplog participated in the flow of goods, ideas and values.

In the same way that we today pose questions about the origin and meaning of life, people in prehistoric times also wondered about the mysteries of life and death. Sacrificial sites and graves and the symbols of the shaman’s drum reflect a striving for contact with gods and spirit creatures.
